The Eixample (or Ensanche in Spanish, which literally means 'extension'), is the central, largest and most-populous area of the Catalan capital, and is divided in turn into 6 districts. The history of this district is compelling: it was built in the mid-19th century by the visionary architect Ildefons Cerdá, who decided that the centre of Barna (Barcelona), which was expanding at the time, should be a welcoming and egalitarian place, where everyone had the same space to live and where light was a priority. The result is a network of neat streets lined with low, elegant buildings, where international boutiques and clubs, hotels with beautiful terraces, glamorous restaurants and museums all to discover, have found their natural homes.
